Time is Now – Video launch

Premier for short video at the Phoenix Theatre.

On the 19th of March, 2-5 pm we shall be launching The Time is Now , a short musical video exploring the social and political context of 1958 Nairobi on the eve of independence. Set in the Railways, the video highlights the overlap between music, dance, life and politics as each took a step towards forming not only a new country but a new Nairobi sound as well.

As part of the premier event we will also be launching a photo series on the railway  stations between Mombasa and Nairobi, which are being decommissioned as the SGR is being built. The spectacular photo essay from historical site Save The Railway will be presented, accompanied by Ujenzi, a symphony of the building of the railway, composed for the 50th anniversary of Kenya ‘s Independence by Njane Mugambi, who has also written the music for the video.

This premier is the first step in our ultimate goal to make a feature film entitled Last Dance in Kaloleni, which expands the political, music and dance stories that you will see in the short video. We would like this film to be a uniquely Kenyan narrative of work, leisure, love and politics. We are aiming to raise funds to complete the production in Nairobi by the end of 2016.

Directed by Bettina Ng’weno.
